1990 Miata Automatic - Shifter Assembly Needed

My above car is in need of a shifter assembly.  The shifter wobbles when being shifted until it gets into gear and then is OK.  I took the car to Faulkner Mazda who informed me that the shift assembly was the problem and that it was beyond repair.  It cost me $81 dollars to find out what the problem was and stated it would gradually get worse.

I was quoted a price of $380 dollars for the shift assembly and a price of $280 dollars to have it installed.  I bought my car new and it only has 49K original miles but the price for the repair seems high to me, especially because the assembly is basically a plastic part.  Any suggestions for a cheaper and reliable repair will be appreciated.

You didn't mention the year of your Miata but I checked and Planet Miata sells new Shifter Rebuild Kits for '99-'05 Miatas at $80-$111 including a new boot.  Check their web page below and give them a call to see if a rebuild kit is the fix you need.     http://www.planet-miata.com/index.php?section=search-item&idn=215

Have you tried posting a question on the Miata.net forum?  They have a new section for automatics of all years.  http://forum.miata.net/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=62

You might also try Rosenthal Arlington Mazda.  Of course you'd have to do the installation yourself or go to an independant mechanic.  I'm not sure what you're looking for, but try this link or give them a call.  http://parts.arlingtonmazda.com/categories/Miata-%7B47%7D-MX%252d5/1990%252d1997/Drive-Train/?sort=featured&page=1

Thanks for the info Merlin.  However I could not find shift assembly for a 90 Miata on the Planet Miata site.

February 1st Update:   The shifter assembly I ordered arrived via  Fed-X from New Auto Parts located in Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.  They can be reached at 1-508-295-9096.  The assembly cost me a below wholesale cost of $ 306.34.  Faulkner Mazda wanted 565.27 for the same item.

Any recommendations for a professional installation of the assembly at a reasonable price?

I haven't used them yet, but Meenan Transmissions in Lansdale (and Willow Grove) has a good rep. Website is www.meenantransmissions.com and they're on Facebook too. I don't "facebook" so know nothing about that aspect.
