Join Anne and me on September 23, 2018 to drive the back roads to Jim Thorpe. This is an all new 80 mile run. Some of the views will be similar to June’s Kempton hills run, but all of the roads will be different and we will end up further west in Jim Thorpe. It will start in Kutztown PA. which will immediately get us onto the back roads we love.
This is an extremely scenic run in the Blue Mountain Ridge and Valley Appalachians. The roads are very rural, some only a car width or a car and a half width wide. There will be blind curves and hill tops to negotiate so the pace in these areas may be slow, but there will be plenty of open rural roads. Drivers will totally enjoy the roads and navigators will be constantly saying wow, look at that view! The Blue Mountain Ridge will dominate the view to the west prior to driving over Hawk Mountain toward Schuylkill Haven for a rest stop.
We will be driving through the main street of Jim Thorpe. It has a very rich history and historic 19th century architecture including a jail and opera house. Lunch will be at the Riverwaick Saloon in Perryville were the Pohopoco Creek merges into the Lehigh River 7 miles east of Jim Thorpe.
Since both Schuylkill Haven and Jim Thorpe are very old towns with narrow streets keeping together as a group is unlikely. I recommend using a GPS to find the rest and lunch stops where we will regroup. The addresses will be indicated on the queue sheet. Schuykill Haven is the only suitable place for a rest stop on an otherwise all rural route.
This will be a run you will not soon forget. Join us; I know you’ll love it!
