New Miata owner 2000 SE with 77K looking for a knowledgeable shop to replace belt, water pump, etc .  Delaware County or Philadelphia. Anyone with experience please feel free to suggest a shop.  Thank you. J

    Welcome to the Miata family!

First a tip: while replacing the timing belt & water pump at 60K is a good practice, Mazda recommended replacement at 100K for the NA & NB Miatas sold in CA.   It's likely due to some regulation but I mention it so you don't feel rushed to get it done today.

As for a recommended shop, my experience is that the dealer is a good first choice. Since my first Miata in '91, their prices have been about the same as at any other shop and you know the mechanics will be familiar with your car.  If you don't trust your local dealership, you can try a nearby one or another option is Pro Imports Auto Service in Collingswood, NJ (about 40 minutes from you).   They are experienced at engine work and should be able to handle your job.  Their number is 856-751-9400 and ask for Tim.

Thank you so much.  I had an interest in the Collingswood shop but no real reason to consider them.  The dealer option appeals to me from the knowledge standpoint but I don't totally trust dealerships.  The best news is that I don't necessarily need to decide quickly.  Regards,  John and Ceil

I was in a difficult position.  The '04 MSM had not quite 41K miles on the clock, but it was over 10 years old.  I was concerned about age (degradation of rubber belts) more than mileage.  Took the car to Jonathan Motorcars in Edgewater Park, NJ.  It's on Rt 130 between the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge and the Burlington Bristol Bridge.  Don't know how convenient that would be for you.  Regardless, one of the owners or managers has a Miata and they do all the work on it.  I thought I'd try them.  I have the Flyin' Miata MSM intake system and let them take a look, since it wasn't completely stock and may not fit the standard time/materials estimates.  They did the 60K service, water pump, serpentine belts, oil and filter, transmission oil, differential oil, and flush the cooling system.  The car also had a remote oil filter re-location kit on it which was leaking.  They removed that.  I'm very happy with the work and intend to take both the Miata and Impreza to them for service in the future.  An added plus, they have a great selection of low mileage used cars, their specialty.  Here's a link.  http://www.jonathanmotorcars.com/
